The plan to ‘transform 700,000 delivery workers to technical positions’ proposed by Liu Changdong, Chairman of Chinese logistics company Jingdong, is causing a big stir in the global platform economy. He predicted that robots would be in charge of deliveries in future logistics sites, and announced the so-called ‘nirvana plan’ to retrain the current courier workforce into robot maintenance, repair, and repair experts. This is interpreted as a preemptive response to shift the nature of work from manual labor to technical management, rather than technological innovation completely destroying employment. But despite this blueprint, practical questions remain. Meanwhile, policy attempts to protect the safety and rights of platform workers are also being developed from various angles. In addition, tragic aspects of the work environment still exist at individual sites, such as conflicts between technicians in charge of maintenance of home appliances and consumers, and incidents of assault against taxi drivers. These incidents remind us once again that no matter how advanced technology is, mutual respect and a systematic protection system are ultimately more important in a work environment where ‘people’ meet face-to-face.
