메타의 위기, 화려한 알고리즘 뒤에 가려진 ‘이용자 보호’라는 민낯 > K-wave Trends

This large-scale service failure in the meta means more than just a temporary connection error. The disruption of Instagram, Facebook, and Thread, which began around 11 PM on the 12th, expanded not only domestically but also globally, paralyzing the daily lives of numerous users. Service tracking sites such as DownDetector were flooded with complaints regarding overall functionality, such as the inability to send DMs and feed refresh errors, and users moved to other platforms, including X, to complain of inconvenience. Meta was unable to provide an immediate answer regarding the cause of the situation or the time of recovery, once again revealing its closed nature of information transmission. This is an example that proves how deeply large platforms have penetrated our lives and at the same time shows how weak the system stability is.

Behind the physical inconvenience of service failure, the results of the ‘2025 Telecommunications Operator User Protection Task Evaluation’ announced by the Korea Media and Communications Commission are weighing heavily. In this evaluation, Instagram and Facebook received the lowest rating of ‘poor’, clearly exposing the state of user protection that does not live up to their reputation as a global company. On the other hand, domestic companies such as Naver and LG U+ received a ‘very good’ rating and were in contrast by showing an active approach to user convenience and damage prevention. In particular, as soon as Instagram was first included in the main evaluation, it received a report card indicating a lack of user protection capabilities, making it difficult to avoid criticism that the protection of users' rights and interests had taken a back seat to the platform's pursuit of profitability.

Meta has recently been emphasizing technological innovation, such as by upgrading its artificial intelligence (AI)-based recommendation algorithm and introducing the ‘Your Algorithm’ function that allows users to directly adjust their own feeds. CEO Adam Mosseri pledged to expand users' choices and strengthen transparency, and to create an environment where users can proactively manage their interests through a large-scale language model (LLM). However, apart from these spectacular technological advancements, the basic and practical protection system, such as handling complaints and redressing damages experienced by users while using the service, still remains at an inadequate level. Although technological advancement is moving in the direction of strengthening users' initiative, if the basic principles of service stability and responsible response are shaken, it is difficult for any innovation to give full trust to users.

Meanwhile, regardless of the platform’s user protection issues, social media still exerts a strong cultural influence. The recent case where actor Kim Moo-yeol's photo became a hot topic after being shared on famous professional wrestler John Cena's Instagram clearly shows that social media is a key channel for spreading popular culture across borders. Additionally, the way brands such as Schoollooks communicate with students through Instagram events is considered an example of marketing that effectively utilizes the functional aspects of the platform. These positive cultural use cases prove the potential of the platform, but at the same time, they simultaneously place a paradoxical demand that platform companies must fulfill social responsibility and user protection obligations commensurate with this influence.
