On the afternoon of the 12th, a dizzying situation occurred on a train passing Guro Station on Seoul Subway Line 1. Smoke suddenly began to rise from an auxiliary battery belonging to a passenger in compartment 4 of an electric train heading from Incheon to Dongducheon. Since it was a time when people were flocking home from work, it was a tense moment that could have resulted in serious casualties or extreme confusion. Fortunately, the passenger in question immediately extinguished the embers, and thanks to the quick response of station employees, about 200 passengers were able to get off safely. Afterwards, the passengers safely transferred to subsequent trains that arrived at 7-minute intervals, and the train where the accident occurred was immediately returned to the depot for further investigation.

This accident once again reminds us of the dangers of lithium-ion batteries, which are deeply embedded in our daily lives. Auxiliary batteries, which have become a necessity for modern people, such as smartphones, tablets, and electric kickboards, are a potential risk factor that can cause fire anytime, anywhere. Especially in the special environment of a closed subway cabin, even a small amount of smoke can stimulate fear in passengers and cause a very high risk of secondary accidents. As seen in this case, it is very encouraging that a large-scale disaster can be prevented only when the rapid initial response of passengers who recognize the accident and the systematic transfer guidance of the railway operating agency are combined. However, since we cannot always leave it to chance, it is time to further solidify social consensus on personal device management rules and safety guidelines for handling batteries in public places.

Meanwhile, at the same time, a large-scale training to solidify the foundation of railway safety was held at Bugang Freight Station in Sejong City, attracting attention. This exercise, conducted under the name '2026 READY KOREA', assumed the worst complex disaster situation in which a freight train derails due to heavy rain and soil spills, resulting in an oil leak and even an explosion. Beyond simply recovering the train, the focus was on how related organizations would work together to restore facilities and prevent secondary damage in the event of a disaster. Railroad construction recovery personnel demonstrated skilled techniques to quickly restore track facilities despite pouring rain and difficult terrain, proving that regular, systematic training determines the success or failure of disaster response.

An auxiliary battery accident in the subway and a freight train derailment training are different types of incidents, but ultimately lead to one goal: 'railroad safety.' Everyday disturbances and virtual major disasters are both realistic threats that can happen by our side at any time. Preventing accidents is best, but when an accident occurs, how quickly it responds and minimizes damage shows the true capabilities of the system. This series of incidents once again reminded us how important it is to strengthen field personnel's quick judgment and response capabilities through training. We must recognize the risks hidden in the convenience of technology and constantly inspect the institutional and human infrastructure to manage them.
