The background of Choansan Hydrangea Garden is worthy of being considered an exemplary example of urban regeneration. In the past, this area was a dark space where residents could not visit as the forest was seriously damaged due to indiscriminate accumulation of waste and illegal cultivation. However, Nowon-gu carried out a large-scale maintenance project in 2023, restoring damaged nature and completely transforming it into an ecological garden for residents. Currently, over 11,000 hydrangeas of over 20 species, including Annabelle, Endless Summer, and Star Hydrangea, are planted here, creating a feast of abundant flowers that captivate the attention of visitors throughout the summer.

Hydrangeas have the mysterious characteristic of changing flower color depending on the acidity of the soil, so they are sometimes called ‘natural litmus paper.’ The colorful colors of these hydrangeas harmonize with the lush greenery of Choansan Mountain, maximizing visual refreshing and providing a mystique of nature that is difficult to find in the city. Natural streams, waterfalls, ecological ponds, and watermills are harmoniously arranged throughout the garden, creating the illusion of entering a deep mountain garden. In addition, the 1.3km barrier-free circular trail connected to Biseokgol Park has been carefully designed so that anyone, including the elderly and children, can enjoy the walk without any inconvenience.

Nowon-gu is spurring the revitalization of local culture by utilizing these natural resources and holding the '2026 Choansan Hydrangea Festival' from the 20th to the 21st. This festival went beyond simply appreciating flowers and was planned as a comprehensive arts event featuring high-quality cultural performances by the Western Symphony Orchestra and singers Jang Sa-ik and Tei. Six photo zones, including Hydrangea Arch Road, Hydrangea Waterfall, and Elephant Family Topiary, will be set up throughout the festival site to provide visitors with unforgettable memories. Additionally, food trucks and flower sales booths linked to local commercial districts are expected to double the joy of the festival and revitalize the local economy.

It is also worth noting the efforts made by the district office to ensure a comfortable and safe viewing experience for citizens. In preparation for the scorching heat of midsummer, we have established a thorough heat response system, including installing awnings in the lawn square and picnic area and operating coolers and cooling fog on major trails. Ambulances and safety personnel were deployed to the site, and Sinchang Middle School's playground was opened as a temporary parking lot to minimize inconvenience to visitors. This systematic operation goes beyond a simple one-time event and effectively conveys to citizens the brand value that Nowon-gu pursues as a 'healing city where nature and culture coexist'.
